Calling all Foodies

Calling all Foodies

What better way to engage the senses than with food.  Eating is an exercise we all must engage in, at least periodically. Food though, is not simply about nourishment. When properly prepared, food engages all of the senses: the crunch of flat http://www.epicurious.com/bread, the smell of bacon, the tantalizing look of beautifully plated desserts, and the sensation you get from chopping vegetables that activates your inner chef.  Wouldn’t we all like to barbeque like Iron chef Bobbie Flay? Well my fellow foodies, Epicurious has you covered! Besides having a clever name that makes you well…curious about its contents; the app contains a wealth of information about food.

While Epicurious has been around for some time, even before the smart phone era, it has recently reinvented itself to focus more on home cooks. The app is an extension of the website, and contains thousands of recipes from many of your favorite famous chefs. So far this app sounds much like the basic online recipe collection, but do not fret; Epicurious offers so much more. In addition to the multiple recipes, Epicurious allows you to plan your weekly meals, and create shopping lists all at your fingertips. It even allows you to create your own virtual recipe book that can include Epicurious recipes, your grandmas recipes, or recipes from anywhere on the Web. If you are still not convinced, then try toasting your grains in oil before cooking. This is a simple, but tasty trick I learned from my new best friend Epicurious. If you love food, not just eating it, but experiencing it, then this app is for you.  Interested in broadening your food repertoire and indulging in Mediterranean or African cuisine? Epicurious has you covered.

Of course there is a Ying to every Yang, and an up for every down. This app does contain non-food information. You may occasionally stumble upon hairstyle articles that have nothing to do with food. I do not enjoy thinking about hair while I am eating or preparing food, but this is a small price to pay for the invaluable content. It is not enough to keep me from recommending it.  These kind of random topics float around in the community table, a forum for readers.

If you want to add some spice to your eating life, download the Epicurious app, maybe skip the community forum. The community table is not all bad. It does provide a sense of community, and allows users to ask question about recipes, cooking times, or just about anything food-related. I liken it to the Facebook of Epicurious. If you are a Facebook foodie, [you know who you are]. Those of you carefully photograph every meal, then immediately post to your timeline, and wait for comments, the community table is your haven!  All-in-all the developers did a good job appealing to multiple audiences.

The Epicurious app is both user-friendly and intuitive. It supports you in maintaining a healthy diet, and helps take the blah out of your everyday food regime. Epicurious also contains daily newsletters from experts and home chefs alike. You can quickly find random bits of information i.e., how to de-spice a pepper, what to do with stale bread, how to reuse cooking oil etc. The app also serves as a money-saver because with the ingredient lists, you only purchase what you need.  And did I mention the great price point, zero dollars, nothing, zip, absolutely free! Now that upgrades this app from great to awesome. Enjoy!
