Do you own a Fitbit? I do and I love it! I was first introduced to Fitbit through my
work as they are always offering healthy options for employees and often at a
discount. Fitbit is a wireless activity tracking
device that can be clipped to your shoelaces, pants, pocket, jacket, or worn on
your wrist. Fitbit products track various activities in your day, whether they
are steps, calories burned, sleep patterns and other health stats. These activities can be automatically synced
via a Fitbit app on your phone or computer.
There are many products to choose from with prices ranging
from $59.95 to $249.00 that ‘fit’ your needs.
Some of the earlier products are the Zip (tracks steps, distance and
calories burned); One (tracks, steps, distance, calories burned, floors climbed
and sleep); Flex (tracks steps, distance, calories burned, active minutes and
sleep); Charge (tracks steps, distance, calories burned, floors climbed, active
minutes and sleep and Caller ID); Charge HR - this is what I currently have. It
tracks continuous heart rate, all –day activity stats and sleep and includes
caller ID which I have found pretty handy if I am waiting for a certain
call-then I grab my phone to get it).
Another mention worthy product is the Surge. The Surge is a super fitness watch and is ideal
if you are into many sports such as cycling, running, cross training. It tracks, GPS, continuous heart rate, all day
activity stats, and sleep. It also
includes SmartTrack™ and has a much longer battery life than other trackers,
call and text notifications, as well as controlling songs from your mobile
playlist.
If you are health conscious or watching your weight, the Aria,
a Wi-Fi Smart scale measures weight, BMI, lean mass and body fat percentage. The Aria recognizes up to 8 users so if you
have a full household that is tracking any of the above, it keeps your results
individual and private.
Two of the newest additions in 2016 to the Fitbit products
are the Blaze and Alta. The Blaze is a smart fitness watch with features like PurePulse™
(continuous automatic wrist-based heart rate), connected GPS, onscreen workouts
and more. The Alta, which may also be my next
upgrade from the Charge HR, is a wristband that tracks all day activity, auto sleep, SmartTrack™ (recognizes
select activities and records it in the exercise section of the Fitbit app), as
well as reminders to move (see comment below regarding health insurance
requirement).
As noted above, each has some of the same features with a
little extra, depending on your need. I
started with the One, and this is a nice product but the only thing I didn’t like about the
product, was it’s ease of slipping off from the top of my pants, where it was
clipped. That’s just me, but it came off on a couple occasions. I knew there
were other options out there, so I switched to the Charge HR, which is a
wristband style. I use the Charge HR
tracker due to a health insurance requirement to track my steps during the day
because I am overweight (let’s keep this between us). I had the option to either join Weight Watchers
or get off my bum and move, move, move!
Because of my hectic schedule and locations of the WW offices available,
I chose to move! As I stated, I need to log a minimum number of steps daily
which syncs to my Fitbit app on my phone or my computer, whichever one I am
near. An added bonus, you can connect
multiple trackers to one account and Fitbit will automatically detect when you
switch between them and some of these products auto-sync.
Fitbit support has always been wonderful. They are quick to respond if you have a
complaint, or lose a tracker and will replace your tracker at no cost. Please be mindful if you plan on swimming or jumping
in the lake this summer and forget your tracker is on your clothing!
