#ProjectNatickDataCenter
Project Natick is a new idea about
where Microsoft can put their data centers (The Cloud) at the ocean floor. The
project says that the goal of these data centers is to be fully dependable and
require zero IT personnel to work on it at all, that means it is a self
sustaining machine and it would never require hands on maintenance. The project
estimates that the data center could last up to ten years on the ocean floor! Being
on the ocean floor would also give the data center a natural free cooling
system. These ocean floor data centers would take a substantially lesser amount
of power the video says 27 kw and the potentials for that freeing up that much
power on land is incredible. The project website also says that the data
centers would be zero emissions so not only cutting down on power use you can
also knock out pollution at the same time.
There are some downsides that to
these data centers The first downside is that once you deploy the data center
if something goes wrong there really is no way to fix it, they compare it to a
space shuttle so when they launch if something goes wrong there really is no
way to fix them either. Another downside is if these data center could replace
the current ones then that would replace the need for IT maintenance guys,
Microsoft says they offer some of them other jobs but that others aren’t so
lucky. Another unfortunate downside is that these data centers take nearly two
years to construct, Microsoft says that eventually they will be able to cut the
manufacturing time down to somewhere around 90 days. So all in all this project
is a very innovative way to fix a few problems in today's society.
