Social Media Revives Surge

What is the One of the Biggest things social media in the past year? How about a group of people that catches the attention of a billion dollar company to re-release an old favorite. I'm taking about the Surge movement. Back in September of 2014 a group started a social media page call The Surge Movement which was simply a group of people who all shared one common love, Surge the citrus soda which was originally created in 1994 by Coca Cola to compete with Mountain Dew. By 2001 Surge was cancelled with a following left wondering when they would taste they're top citrus choice in beverages again.

One Year ago after these fans paid for a billboard that read "Hey Coca Cola we can't buy surge so we bought Billboard Instead." They were granted the satisfaction of Surge being sold on Amazon.com after over a decade of lifelessness. But the success did not stop there. Two months ago in a meeting at the Detroit Distribution Surge was announce that it would be sold in stores starting September 7th. Four days later Surge was sold out in the Metro Detroit Area because of the high demand.
On this instance social media was used as a tool to first find a common interest. In that common interest a group of people were able to common with a goal to achieve their common desire. It is this story, that gives social media more power than any study group or test lab because people came together and voices their desires to the largest beverage company in the world. And a year later now the common person and find out what all the fuse is about by picking one off the shelf.

One purpose one goal one people, in my opinion this is one of the greatest things we have seen social media do because it shows that the little guy has a voice nowadays. Before social media the was only an email. But with it, ideas become actions and actions bring the supply to demand. Go Surge!
