Allegiance: Using Social Media to Bring a Dream to Life.
George Takei is known the world over as Mr. Sulu from the Star Trek franchise. But what is not widely know about him is that he was sent to an internment camp during WWII. Sadly history classes don't teach about the dark period of history when approximately 120,000 Americans were forced to live in camps simply because they were of Japanese descent.
But Mr. Takei decided to bring this hidden fact into the light. He helped to create and star in Allegiance. It is a musical about a Japanese-American family living in an internment camp during WWII. It first opened in 2012 at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego.
To help generate buzz about Allegiance, George Takei turned to social media. It's all well and good to have a website about something, but people aren't going to go to the site if they haven't heard of it. So Mr. Takei used his online popularity to introduce his fans to the musical. He created pages on Facebook and Twitter to garner even more attention.
This turned out to be a great decision for George Takei. Social Media brought much attention to not only Allegiance, but to the internment camps themselves. And Social Media has helped to bring this musical to Broadway, where it will open on November 8, 2015!
