Yik Yak. Changing anonymous social media

Yik Yak is an anonymous app that lets you post something to those people around you that have the app. It is local so only the surrounding people that have the app can comment on what you post. Another aspect of this app is voting, someone can either vote something up or down. If a post gets so many down votes that it gets removed. On the other hand you can set it up to where the highest voted post go to the top of the list so those are the first you see when you open the app.

Yik Yak is a great way of finding out what’s going on around you and being able to relate to people in your area that you normally have no way of communicating with. As well, you can save areas to read the post even while not in that area but you cannot post or comment on the post in that area if you are not presenting there. Which leads me to my next point, that your location must be on to use the app, which gives the app a sort of authentic feel that you’re actually interacting with those who are around you.

For the most part it is sort of a college town type of app but from my experience it is used almost everywhere but in less populated areas there might be only 2 post a day compared to 20 post an hour in a college town.

This site goes into the pros and cons of Yik Yak and views the new social media tool from a few different angles: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-things-need-know-yik-yak/
